See up close the impressive replica of the largest creature that ever lived in Crete? Have you ever wondered how we can recreate the appearance of people or animals that lived thousands of years ago?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the unique interactive exhibitions of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.old.athens-science-festival.gr\/en\/\"> <b>Athens Science Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students of all ages will discover how modern technology allows us to bring worlds so distant from our own closer to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geol.uoa.gr\/tmima\/\"> <b>Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is actively participating in this year&#8217;s festival, presenting <\/span><b>8 exciting activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Amazing interactive exhibits from various laboratories within the Department will immerse you in the fascinating world of Geology and Paleontology!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the exhibition &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Paleoscope<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geol.uoa.gr\/ereyna\/ergastiria\/\"> <b>Laboratory of Geoscience Teaching and Learning<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we will have the opportunity to take a journey through the geological and historical past of Athens. Using 3D virtual reality glasses, we will be able to visit Athens during the time of Pericles, see what the city looked like during the era of dinosaurs, and even encounter the largest creature that ever lived in Attica!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.remsenslab.geol.uoa.gr\/\"> <b>Remote Sensing Laboratory<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will present &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Geology in Three Dimensions<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. We will discover how using state-of-the-art equipment, it\u2019s now possible to recreate mountains, caves, cliffs, and other geological features in three-dimensional models in virtual reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that new technologies allow us to admire geological phenomena from\u2026 a distance \u2013 without the need to travel to where they are located? In the interactive exhibition &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Photorealistic View of Geological Monuments<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, organized by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geol.uoa.gr\/ereyna\/ergastiria\/\"> <b>Research Center of Museum Studies<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we will see how it is currently feasible to accurately represent geological formations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lacae.geol.uoa.gr\/en\/home-page\/\"> <b>Laboratory of Climatology and Atmospheric Environment<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will present the activity &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Capturing the Climate of My City<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Through specialized equipment, such as thermal cameras on drones and meteorological stations, we will illustrate how the materials in the city shape its microclimate, considering the current conditions of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like to examine the resume of an earthquake? To travel from Falasarna to Chile, where the strongest earthquakes have been recorded? The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dggsl.geol.uoa.gr\/en_index.html\"> <b>Laboratories of Seismology and Geophysics<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will present the interactive exhibition &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Living with Earthquakes \u2013 The Secrets of the Earth<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever wondered how we locate and extract valuable materials? How do we acquire useful elements and where do they end up after their useful life? In the experimental interactive demonstration &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Earth\u2019s Materials<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, organized by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/geochem.geol.uoa.gr\/\"> <b>Laboratory of Economic Geology and Geochemistry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we will explore real minerals and rocks, copper extraction processes from ores, and much more!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.uoa.gr\/el\/about_us\/museums\/paleontology_and_geology_museum\/\"> <b>Paleontology and Geology Museum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will provide us with the opportunity to get up close to unique fossils from Greece and around the world in the exhibition &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Virtual Museum of Paleontology<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. We&#8217;ll get to know the &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vpalm.gr\/\"><b>V-PalM<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; project, which allows us to virtually explore stunning exhibits through an innovative digital platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the activity &#8220;<\/span><b><i>The Wonderful Marine Microcosm<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; by the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/labgeopal.geol.uoa.gr\/\"><b>Laboratory of Historical Geology and Paleontology<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we will observe, under a microscope, marine microorganisms that have been shaping the world around us for millions of years. Come and discover how this &#8220;invisible&#8221; world contributes to the formation of geological rocks and actively participates in regulating the climate system of the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous other exceptional exhibitions will be in the <\/span><b>Machine-works<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take us on a journey into the underground layers of the Earth and the distant historical past!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bbem.edu.gr\/\"> <b>Industrial and Technological Educational Museum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> invites us to ponder how materials, that have been deep within the Earth for millions of years, end up in our hands to facilitate our daily lives. Join us for the activity &#8220;<\/span><b><i>From the Depths of the Earth to Our Neighborhood<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; to discover the world of mineral resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you like to meet the prehistoric relative of the elephant &#8211; the largest animal that ever lived in Crete! At the exhibition &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Hanging Out with the Giant Dinosaur!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, presented by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhmc.uoc.gr\/en\/\"> <b>Natural History Museum of Crete at the University of Crete<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, children will have their first encounter with Paleontology and Geology and they will even have the chance to take photos with the impressive, colorful replica of the giant creature!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Michael-Socrates Kafousias<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with his participation titled &#8220;<\/span><b><i>Skull Reconstruction in Archaeology and Paleontology<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, will explain all the secrets of reconstructing the skulls of humans or animals that lived thousands of years ago. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to see a three-dimensional reconstruction of a Viking&#8217;s head, as well as a two-dimensional depiction of the famous dinosaur, Dippy.
